Fat PS3 systems suffering new-age Y2K bug?

Did you think that the Y2K bug was behind us after the new millennium came and went? Well, if you own a Fat model of the PS3, you’re wrong.

In a statement from Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA), apparantly the Fat PS3 models are suffering from an error, the symptoms of which include:

  • Loss of Trophies
  • Inability to play some (or all) games
  • Reset of system date to Jan 1, 2000
  • Inability to update the system clock via the internet
  • And possibly more. Note, however, that this bug does NOT affect the PS3 Slim models, only the fatter ones.

As of the time of this post, Sony is currently looking into the problem, and until it is resolved, they are suggesting that Fat owners DO NOT use their system, as it can cause an irrevocable loss of data. More to come as the situation develops.
